I moved back to Austin in 2006 and started playing with the Charles Potts Magic Windmill Band again. One of the venues we played most often was The Carousel Lounge. It was easy to book a show there, but the sound system was awful and there wasn’t a stage. You just set-up on the floor at one side of the building. It was on the east side of I35 in a sketchy part of town, but our friends would show up more often than not.

The Carousel opened in 1963 and is rumored to have stayed the same throughout its run. The owner’s daughter still runs it to this day. Her name is Nicki Mebane and I got to know her well. She’d give each band member a couple drink tickets and eventually I got her to give us a cut of the door. It was never very much as we charged very little if at all.

I don’t remember which year this was from, but Count Draculas Weed Smuggling Jam Engine didn’t start until 2007. The Windmill Band’s last show was on Sept. 19th, 2008.

I made most of the flyers for our shows. I come across them now and again. As I find them I’ll post them here.
